Inverted - Form, Facade and Treatments
Burleigh Heads is a coastal suburb in the Gold Coast, known for its surf beaches and famed headland. Our site is to the west of the headland, one block north of the Tallebudgera creek.
Nestled amidst low-set dwellings, our site presented a unique design opportunity for us. We envisioned a structure that would rise above its immediate surroundings, captivating its inhabitants by immersing them in the picturesque environment that envelops it. By elevating the structure, we sought to create a living experience that transcends the boundaries set by the neighbouring dwellings, offering residents a glimpse of the panoramic views and reconnecting them with the natural elements that surround the site.
We created a proposal for 4 dwellings on the site, all tied together with a common external design theme. The concave is an idea that came about in an attempt to tie the beams over the driveway into the design of the facade. Each lining up with the dwellings above, these inverted curves became a manifestation of each dwelling’s real estate, represented on the external facade.
We then used this theme as a facade treatment. The inverted arch sits proudly on the front of the building as a precursor for things to come in the rest of the built form.
